MOVING BODIES

A dance you have with yourself surrounded by others in their own dance. In 1972, Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith co-founded the form by experimenting with both introspective and communal movement play. Steve then created the Small Dance, an exploratory movement inquiry you have by yourself. Years later, Nancy devised the Underscore as a way to formalize a collective commitment to solo play in community. Their legacy shows how solo play brings to light new ways of relating to the play of others. This work takes the solo exploration of the Small Dance and puts it in relationship to others to create new chance encounters.
